The steampunk scene has slowly moved away from just a small subgenre of fiction to an entire culture and weird sort of nostalgia for a time that never really existed but seems like it should have.
The people over at SteamPunk Magaine produce a very professional publication celebrating and discussing all things steampunk. They [...]

This ebook was released not long ago by Small Beer Press, the same people who recently released Mothers & Other Monsters by Maureen F. McHugh as a free ebook.
It’s a great science fiction short story collection, I’m part way through but enjoying it. I’ll come back and add a real review when I’m done but [...]

As I tend to ignore most of the news on April 1st due to the oh so hilarious April Fool’s jokes, I missed the start of PodCastle, a podcast I had been looking forward to some time.
It’s from the same people who produce EscapePod and PseudopPod, two superb fiction podcasts. PodCastle follows in their footsteps [...]

Another quality free ebook this month in the shape of Mothers & Other Monsters by Maureen F. McHugh. The reviews look very good and I’m a sucker for short stories so this is now sitting somewhere in my to-read pile/cloud.
There are some more free ebooks from this publisher so I’ll post them shortly.

Head over to The Independent where you can snag a copy of Iain Bank’s excellent debut novel The Wasp Factory as an audiobook.
It’s from Audible so probably has the cursed DRM but you can always just burn it to CD. You’ll need to register but it’s no bad thing, Audible are a decent company and [...]

Over at GeekDad, they have teamed up with PS Publishing to offer Jeff VanderMeer’s soon to be released new novel “The Situation” as a free PDF download.
I’ve not read any of his work but it gets consistently good reviews so I’m adding this one to my to-read pile to see if I like it.
Descriptions of [...]

A couple of nice sites for the little ones I seemed to find within days of each other.
First up is Storynory, a free audio podcast providing a new story each week. There are both classic fairy tales and fiction plus newer original (I think) stories, all of which read by Natasha who has a really [...]

The Incwell iPulp Fiction Library is a great little resource I stumbled across today. It has the brilliant premise of publishing “dime novel” style pulp fiction stories with the hope of turning younger people on to reading, which is an aim I can’t applaud enough.
A particular gem is the original short version of Orson Scott [...]

As I mentioned in an earlier post, one of Neil Gaiman’s novels was being voted for by fans and that novel would be published for free online for one month.
Well the novel chosen, rather predictably was American Gods and you can find it here.
Unfortunately it’s in “Read only online here, using our annoying slow online [...]

Metro, the free London newspaper have been giving a chapter at a time of this classic novel away as a free PDF.
The novel is available free through other means but this is quite a nice illustrated version with all drawings by comic artist Cam Kennedy.
Try the links below for the chapters currently available.
CHAPTER ONE
CHAPTER TWO
